Insomnia was inspired by sleeplessness moments of observing headlights play across a bedroom ceiling in the wee hours of the night. The lines of ribbon match the jagged angles of the cathedral ceiling. Insomnia continues my exploration of shifting value across a quilt from opposing directions, which results in an intriguing display of light, shadow and darkness. Embellishments include commercial ribbons and hot fix Swarovski crystals.
"...some of the quilters in the show (Art Quilts: New England/New York 2006) demonstrate a remarkable ability to express their emotional experiences in cloth with the same degree of subtilty that an accomplished painter might achieve on canvas. For example, in a piece titled Insomnia, Gwyned Trefethen captures the confusion and anguish that run riot at the border between exhaustion and troubled sleep."
