Compassion
If you were to draw up a list of people you have compassion for who would be on it? Did you include yourself? I tend to shy away from self care and self compassion. Yet, I think of myself as a fairly compassionate person both for those in my immediate orbit and those I don’t even know, but learn about.

Thank you to everyone one who took time to share your thoughts on how I could elevate Ciel de Noyer from an adequate abstraction to an attention grabber. There were several excellent suggestions. Ultimately, the majority, including me, opted to go with adding a hot air balloon. I have filed, in my mental rolodex, the other ideas. You never know when they might be the perfect solution in the future.
Here is where self compassion comes in. I struggle. Oh do I struggle. This is typical whenever I launch myself into something I have never done before. How in the world should I create the hot air balloon? There are many options swirling in my head. The easiest way would have been to print the photo onto fabric, carefully cut it out and then fuse it to the top. That did not read well with me. I finally settled on trying my hand at paper piecing the balloon.
Piecing the Hot Air Balloon
Of course, no paper piecing pattern exists, so what to do? Design my own. 🙂 Step 1 was to determine the scale. The balloon is approximately 8″ x 8″. I opted to stick with the rainbow pattern. Why? Several reasons. First, I find rainbows optimistic. Second, the bright pop of color works well against the more subdued sky.
I can imagine getting quite lost in the piecing of my balloon. You will see letters and red lines in the pattern. The letters indicate the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. The red lines will help me match up the segments. Fingers crossed this will work. If not, I will need to remind myself that’s OK and be compassionate about at least making an attempt at doing something new.

This month, the 2024 RSC assignment is either to create dark blocks or play catch up. Since dark blocks aren’t part of my plan, I’m figuring out which blocks I haven’t made and making them. Here are some of the yellow blocks I made this week.
Next, I will finish the chartreuse blocks!
