Drishti or Focus
Find your drishti, loosely translated as focus or focal point, is a common direction in yoga practice. Boy, does that resonate with me as a life lesson. It is also applicable to art. When you find your focus life doesn’t feel as chaotic or overwhelming. Just one more reason why I naturally gravitate towards working on one primary artwork at a time.
Photo Challenge
My artwork focus this week is the challenge set by my critique group. The object is to use the above photograph taken by one of our members, Jayne Gaskins, as a springboard to create a fiber art piece in our voice. We met this week. I don’t think I have ever laughed so hard during one of our meetings. Oh, the joy of a focused and supportive critique group. Although I can’t share what the other four members are creating yet, I will be able to do so in the future. I can give you a taste of their artistic voices:

- Jayne Gaskins
- Ann Harwell
- Dorothy Raymond
- Gwyned Trefethen (that’s me 🙂 )
Jayne and Anne are creating work based on the house and wall on the far right. I thought about focusing on that section, too, but decided it was too fussy. Maggie has gone to town with some significant photoshop shuffling and adding a gorgeous garden and more. Dorothy was absent this month. I zeroed in on the sky.
My Focus
So, when it was my turn to share what I was working on, I warned the group my focus was radically different. I am working on the sky. First, I showed them my cropped section of sky. Next came my interpretation of same. Their reaction was priceless. You’ve got to love a group that appreciates coloring outside of the lines, even nurtures it.
Rainbow Scrap Challenge
It seems I am great at focusing. However, my focus isn’t necessarily what others in my orbit are focusing on. So it is with my current Rainbow Scrap Challenge work. The colors selected for August are black and brown. Neither are part of the quilt I am making. Therefore, I am focusing on chartreuse. Love that color. If you look closely at the fabrics you will even see some limes. I’m part way through piecing my chartreuse crumb fabric. Many of the fabric scraps I am using come from fabric I dyed, painted or created using a variety of surface design techniques.
