Pause
Yes, take a moment to pause. This is not always easy. In fact it can feel counter intuitive in our fast paced world. Pausing doesn’t come naturally to me. I handle this by developing a routine that incorporates if not pauses, than at least periodic change and pace throughout my day.
Photo Challenge
I continue to work on the challenge set by my critique group. The object is to use the above photograph taken by one of our members, Jayne Gaskins, as a springboard to create a fiber art piece in our voice. Surprise, surprise, NOT, I am creating work interpreting a single section of the sky.
One of the reasons I love working with fabric and thread is its pace. There is time to pause, reflect and ponder the possibilities of one fabric over another. I could try and capture the sky by carefully hand dying fabric to match the blues, lavenders and smokey grays in the photo. It is possible to create templates to match the shapes of each color. However, that is not how I like to work. I prefer a more pointillist approach, but instead of dots of paint, I use squares and triangles of fabric.
Ciel de Noyer is on my design wall. My studio sits at the top of the stairs. Whenever I head up the stairs, I pause and gaze across the studio at the design wall. It’s a great way to assess what is and what might not be working. Yes, I’ll probably switch out that single bright white triangle center left. It is just too jarring for my taste.
Rainbow Scrap Challenge
I prefer not to work on too many projects at once. There is a practical reason. Even with a roomy, well laid out studio a single project has a way of spilling out over every surface. So, I like to put each project away before moving on to another. Yes, I even pause to do this between working on Ciel de Noyer and the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. I believe it is worth the effort.
I managed to complete all 40 chartreuse (I missed the memo that color of the month is orange) blocks for my 2024 Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilt. I haven’t counted all the completed blocks, but suspect I am far past the halfway point now.
