Prep School
Prep is key throughout our lives. For example, there is prep school. The premise being that the courses taken in prep school prepare one for college. There are prep chefs who do much of the slicing and dicing for a recipe. Making quilts is no exception. I spent much of my week in prepping my two works in progress.
Ceil de Noyer
Last week Ciel de Noyer’s hot air balloon was pinned to the top. This gave me an opportunity to play with the precise placement before I committed and stitched it in place.
My goal is to give the balloon a hint of 3 dimensions. I love trapunto for this. So, when I stitched down the balloon I had two layers of batting (an 80/20 poly cotton batt and a wool batt) behind the balloon on the back side of the quilt. Once the balloon was secure I carefully trimmed away the excess outside the balloon stitches. All part of the prep process before I begin quilting.
Of course I can’t start quilting until I have a back side. It is so tempting at this point to pull one piece of fabric from my stash. However, in preparation to my future plans to downsize considerably, my stash is in serious need of reduction. I selected fabric that was perfect years ago for whatever I was doing, but no longer serves my current style. Hence, another pieced backing.
Rainbow Scrap Challenge
Great news! Ok, great news for me. I finished piecing my final color, brown, for my 2024 RSC quilt. All 255 blocks are stitched, trimmed and ready to be seamed together. I can’t wait to lay them out so I can get a sense of how the quilt top will look.
