Stymied
Today I am feeling stymied about how to frame my post. So, I am simply putting that out there. Being stymied isn’t unusual. The key, I have found, is simply to take a deep breath and think about what simple first step I can take.
Contemplation stymied me at every turn. So much about creating this piece was using either new techniques or techniques I am still learning. The denouement was realizing my standard way of hanging a piece would not work for Contemplation. This is because parts of the quilt are significantly stuffed, while others have no stuffing other than a thin batt. This is both the piece’s strength and putting it charitably, its challenge. So, I turned to the Senior Executive Director of Studio Operations (SEDOSO).
Stymied No More
The SEDOSO helped square Contemplation so it could be “blocked” on the back side. It is also wired for gallery hanging. I’m thinking of this as the first prototype. The rods are approximately .25″ in diameter. They are flexible enough to bend in order to slip into the corner pockets. They are cut the length needed to stretch Contemplation and eliminate the most glaring waffling.
Rainbow Scrap Challenge
One thing I am not stymied by is the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. Well maybe just a little. Finding the time to make blocks each month can be challenging. July’s color is turquoise. Now that is a color I love. So, I was surprised to see how little turquoise I had amongst my blue scraps.
Every month before I create my blocks, or more precisely half square triangles, I add the color (turquoise this month) to my blueprint. This way I know exactly how many turquoise half square triangles to make and which colors they will be paired with.
Now that I have started turquoise I am eager to finish that project. Then it will be on to the next artwork. I confess my mind has leapt there already as I think about how best to approach it. There will be more thread painting. 🙂
