Perspective
So much depends on perspective. For example, where you are on the continuum of your life. Certainly, as a septuagenarian I view life differently than I did as a preadolescent. The scene is quite different at the base of a mountain than the vista at the top. It is the same for art, both for the artist and the viewer.
I met with my art critique group this past Wednesday. One member, when sharing what she was working on sighed and said, “I’m at the point where I hate this piece and just want to finish it.” Was her work awful? No, it was as strong as ever. Next she commented that her work always looked better a few months later. Why? Perspective. When you are working on piece every misstep seems magnified. It is only when you step back and take in the totality of the work that it comes together.
Ceil de Noyer
I am neither at the hate, nor the this is fantastic phase of creating Ciel de Noyer. I am near the top of the preverbal mountain. The quilting phase has begun. Although I don’t love every cloud I have quilted and I might beat myself up over occasionally needing to back track my stitching, my perspective is distant enough that I can see it is working in general. My goal was for the hot air balloon to stand out in bas relief from the sky. Goal met.
Rainbow Scrap Challenge
Guess what else I worked on this week? I have started to assemble my 2024 Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilt. I began by laying out all the blocks by color combinations on my cutting/work table. Then following my pattern I stacked up column #1 to seam together.
It’s a miracle. So far I have every color combination I need and I have managed to accurately stack them. It helps that I have the perspective of tackling similar projects in the past. Therefore, I know how very important it is to not rush simply because I am eager to see the final top.
Do you see those paper notes at the top of each column? That is how I keep track of which column is which, as well as which is the top block in the column. Keeps me from inadvertently sewing a column upside down or out of order.
One thing I’ve learned about perspectives is they don’t contain judgement. They simply are. I am grateful to be able to see life from numerous perspectives, albeit shaded by my own experience and bias. How about you? What are your thoughts on perspective?
